Promotion opportunities, ethics, and good business decisions.

Works-box-ethics

Seems you have quite a dilemma there as you want a promotion; you know you can get this lower opening with your skills but you would rather have the other which is better.

We have a saying in Portuguese that goes like this “better to have one bird in your hands than have two flying around”. If it was just ethics, I would say go for the position they told you to apply for.

The problem is that in business there is not much ethics and if you don’t go for the position, someone else will and you can have two birds flying around. On the other hand, if you apply now, the company might not regard your applying for the position yet to be posted with the same eyes and think that you are doing great in this lower opening position.

Tough to decide, but think about it with the company’s eyes, will they be so ready to take you to the position yet to be posted if you now accept the other?

Is it not safer to go for this position that you were told you could get?

Discuss this with someone you trust and can see the pros and cons. One thing is for certain – there is one bird you know you can catch… the other…you may or not.

At the same time, discuss this with your supervisor, if you trust him, and ask if he sees your decision to apply for both positions as something that will cost unnecessary money to your company – be honest about it; honesty is always the best path to take and good luck.
